The Digital Divide

One of the communication technologies that interested me the most was “The Digital Divide”. According to the lecture, it is “the divide between people with effective access to online information and those with either limited or no access. This divide is broken down into two categories being the technology “haves” and “have nots”. The lecture states, that the technology haves are the “better-educated, wealthy, Caucasians, and Asians, while the have nots are the “less-educated, poor, African Americans, and Hispanics. This was interesting to me because the lower class families don’t have access to the information and knowledge that the upper class families have. This allows the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer.

  1. I agree with the fact that the rich are getting richer, due to the fact that statistics have been released saying that the divide keeps increasing and it at its highest point. I also believe this to be true because the economy is so largely based on technology, so the ones who have access to this technology, will be the ones to expand and be able to have access to furthering money making technology. Who knows where we will be in 20 years but I am willing to bet that the divide will only continue to grow.

  2. Aside from ethnicity, I do believe that in our economy, the rich do get richer, and the poor get poorer. Especially when it comes to education. If one does live in a lower income area, the school system well not invest as much money in new technology advancements than they would in a higher income area. Due to that example alone, the poor remain less educated. A school in a lower income area will not receive the best textbooks, the newest computers and technologies like overhead projectors and even dry erase boards. How will these children have a broadened education when the have limited access to the very things that may enhance their education? This is something we must work on.

People really do not realize how technology can really affect everything that we do. Its kind of sad to say that technoloy is making the divide between rich and poor even bigger due to cost and availability.
